They are just celebrating their year anniversary as of April, 2012. I just made it over here for my first visit and what a great find. They have a really comfortable and pleasant space with both indoor and outdoor seating and there's something about the way the air drifts through and the counter seating and open kitchen that make it especially relaxing. more »

This pizza/Italian restaurant on Long Island features a FULL vegan menu which can be viewed on their website. Also have Vegan Treats desserts. Recently they were posted on Will Travel for Vegan Food and the vegan mozzarella sticks looked pretty darned good, so I'm gonna have to go try now for reals.

Dan updated Udipi Cafe in Monroeville, PA.

So it was written:
Having been to just about every vegetarian restaurant in the Pittsburgh area, this was the last one on the list as it was a bit outside Pittsburgh and I figured how different could a south Indian vegetarian joint be? I was pretty wrong, the food here was actually excellent and well above average among the dozens of Indian veg places I have eaten. Everything was delicious, they had a big menu with dosas, utthapam and all the usual south Indian dishes plus a huge selection of appetizers and curries. Ambience is simple but felt authentic. more »

Dan added FreeFoods NYC in New York, NY.

So it was written:
This was recommended to check out and I haven\'t been there yet. Their menu has kind of a lot of meat on it but they do seem to be going for a \"free-range\" sort of thing. It might be too much to include here, but it is in a bit of a vegetarian wasteland and they do have tempeh, tofu, and vegan and gluten-free items denoted clearly on the menu, plus smoothies and all that stuff. I\'m going to take a look and then decide if they are veg enough to get to remain on the site.

So it was written:
It was falsely reported at one point that they were closing, but the deal fell through and Madeline Bistro remains open thank goodness. Dan updated Flore Vegan in Los Angeles, CA.

So it was written:
I stopped by Flore once without the opportunity to eat, but I made a mental note to return based on the ambience and menu alone and that was reinforced by some amazing pictures I saw of the food probably via Quarrygirl who counted them as a favorite. I was particularly excited cause of a picture of biscuits & gravy I saw, something I have spent time seeking out in the veg restaurants of the world, but due to poor planning on my part I found out upon arriving to dine that they only serve them on the weekends, so my vegan biscuits & gravy will have to wait til next time. They have a huge menu with tons of different items, a breakfast selection, tacos, burritos, plates, sandwiches, fresh juices, many choices. more »

Dan updated Xing Hua in Singapore, Singapore.

So it was written:
Although places of this sort can seem standard in a lot of east Asia, I was really surprised by how above average the food was here. I went for lunch 2-3 times as it was right near my hotel. So it was written:
Although places of this sort can seem standard in a lot of east Asia, I was really surprised by how above average the food was here. I went for lunch 2-3 times as it was right near my hotel. Around lunch-time there is a reasonably long line and it\'s all buffet-style so you can choose I think 4 things and it\'s some very reasonable/cheap price. There are various fake meats, noodles, rice, veggies, whatever you like basically. Probably almost everything is vegan though for a few of the items where dough is involved, you might want to ask about eggs. Despite the hectic and slightly chaotic vibe, the people working there were pretty friendly and people on line are also helpful as well as they clearly have their local regular customers. There is indoor and outdoor seating to choose from and there are actually indoor and outdoor exits so you can come in from the sidewalk or the inside of the mall as you prefer, which was initially confusing to me which is why I mention it. Despite numerous tables, it\'s crowded during peak hours and both times I shared tables which is a good thing in my book cause it lends itself to random conversation and is common in Singapore\'s ubiquitous hawker centers, but it\'s good to know just in case you\'re not disposed to that sort of thing.

Dan added Big Bites in Singapore, Singapore.

So it was written:
I was attracted to this place I suppose because they give off a snacky vibe and I am a big fan of anything resembling street food or small things cause it means delicious and it means high probability of tasting many things instead of getting stuck with one flavor for the whole meal, no matter if it\'s good or bad. That said, I was dining alone so how much can one man eat? I went with a battered cauliflower the likes of which I\'d seen in NYC at one restaurant but never elsewhere and I always like the idea of bringing veggies into it at an Indian place when possible and not just beans and potatoes, which I love, but let\'s make it colorful if we can. Then, I decided to try a \"sizzler\" which I hadn\'t heard of before but subsequently saw all over the place in India. The best I can do to describe it is to say it was a flat dosa with friend onions and potato chips on it. I mean, it was amazing and delicious and spicy and all good things, but that\'s really the best guess I have to what it was. The menu was all vegetarian and as I would later discover in India, vegan is not a concept they understand so you just do your best to ask for no butter, no ghee, no cream and any other dairy you can think of and hope for the best. Seemed to work out here where English was spoken easily though later on in India I had less confidence. Anyway, delicious meal among an endless sea of vegetarian restaurants in Little India and it broke the mold a bit in terms of the typical menu of dosa and idli so I was glad to have followed my intuition and would eat here again for sure.

Dan updated The Stand in Laguna Beach, CA.

So it was written:
This was a very random stop for me while driving on the Pacific Coast Highway and yearning for a snack. I wish it were closer to places I am likely to be, though probably worth an actual visit if I am anywhere close to the neighborhood just cause of it's picturesque and relaxing setting, it's super-friendly people, and the delicious menu which I alas could not partake too fully since I had just eaten. I did manage a delicious cup/bowl of frozen soft-serve fruit (I think that's what it was called) which was very tasty, though I think it was really the setting and the vibe that has always made me positively remember this place and keep it around to revisit the next time I'm in the neighborhood. more »

Dan updated Cafe Viva in New York, NY.

So it was written:
Uptown branch, completely vegetarian and very vegan-friendly Italian food with great homemade soups, calzones, pastas, and of course pizzas with all kinds of interesting veggies, miso-marinated tofu, and interesting crusts like whole wheat, spelt, or hemp. I don't go up here as often cause it's out of my jurisdiction, but when I'm in the neighborhood I often go cause they have a few things I don't get downtown. It's a simple thing, but up here they make pasta with garlic & oil which is sort of a personal preference over marinara sauce. more »

Dan updated V-Note in New York, NY.

So it was written:
From the creator of Blossom and CafĂ© Blossom, comes V-Note, an organic wine bar and vegan bistro set in an elegant, relaxed and inviting space on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. V-Note carries a vast selection of wine and beers, all of which are vegan, organic and/or bio-dynamic and in some cases even kosher, to accompany our completely vegan menu dedicated to fresh gourmet cuisine that is animal-caring. At least that's what they say on their website which seems a fine way to begin. more »

Dan added Blossom Bakery in New York, NY.

So it was written:
Totally vegan, totally delicious. Just opened as of March 2012 and we were there on the first day to capture the glory although sadly, the vegan croissants were sold out FAST. This is hardly surprising since nobody makes them anywhere ever. I will have to wake up early for that one. we did okay all things considered including a sugar cookie, a vegan black & white (!), a brownie, a chocolate chip scone, a red velvet cupcake and a slice of raw, chocolate mousse pie. There were many other choices but our faces and stomach were full. Everyone chose their own favorites but nothing was disappointing in the least. The prices were also reasonable compared to some other more expensive vegan bakeries. Very happy with my first visit here and hope to be a regular visitor and that they stick around a long time!

Dan updated 'Snice in New York, NY.

So it was written:
I have always loved the vibe at 'Snice. I'm not sure what exactly it is. Maybe I'm just kind of a hippie or maybe it's the wood and brick everywhere or maybe it's the laid-back people who take the orders and don't think it's weird that I say "man" a lot. more »

Right in the little Indian community at Black Mountain Rd, this is the one full-on South Indian full-service vegetarian restaurants. Dosas, utthapam, Idli, Vada, all that stuff. Dan updated Loving Hut in San Diego, CA.

So it was written:
The original location of Loving Hut in San Diego. Pretty similar to all Loving Huts. I did get take-out here once and it was fine though in my opinion, take-out will never be a fair representation of a place's food since it can't possibly be as fresh as when it is put right in front of you out of the kitchen. more »

Dan updated Soltan Banoo in San Diego, CA.

So it was written:
Stopped by to check it out a while ago but haven't been by to eat yet. I'm keeping this on the wish list for now because they have a pretty unusual menu and although they do serve meat, they have a lot of vegetarian dishes, they use the word 'vegan' several times on the menu, they use ingredients like quinoa, and they seem to be making an effort to use meat that is either wild or otherwise sustainably raised which is worth something in my view. At least I'd like to give it a try and see what a Persian take on veg cuisine looks like.

Dan added Loving Hut in San Diego, CA.

So it was written:
Another Loving Hut, although to be fair the menu always varies a little. I have eaten at quite a few Loving Huts at this point. Some of the dishes on the menu were fairly standard, though the execution of the dishes we ordered was excellent actually. I had the Lucky Lemongrass and there was fresh lemongrass shaved onto my soy chicken and my friend raved about her eggplant tofu. I also liked the Chocolate Cheesecake I had for dessert and the prices were very reasonable, about $12 each with tax/tip and I had a drink too. Service was very friendly though of course there is always that weird vibe with the Supreme Master on TV, but if you can forget about that the food is very good.

Dan updated El Zarape in San Diego, CA.

So it was written:
I haven't been here yet, but I am going to keep it on the list for at least one try cause though it is meat-heavy, they have a bunch of soy tacos and soy burritos. They don't actually say "vegan" on the menu but it's a bit more effort than standard beans and veggies without cheese and I'd say it merits at least a try.

So it was written:

Dan updated Surati Farsan Mart in San Diego, CA.

So it was written:
I have eaten in lots and lots of Indian restaurants in quite a few cities and I'm comfortable saying that Surati Farsan Mart is epically awesome. I'm a big fan of sharing lots of small things and this place is great for that. They have Vada Pav which is a Mumbai street snack consisting of fried potato balls on small slider buns with spicy garlic chutney and that's kind of hard to find in the US, so for that alone it's a worthwhile visit. more »

Rebecca's is a great, atmospheric coffee shop in a relatively residential neighborhood. Dan added Peace Pies in Encinitas, CA.

So it was written:
This is the second location of this 100% raw restaurant. The first is in Ocean Beach. This used to be a raw restaurant called the Greenery which passed the space on to these guys. The two guys at the counter were super helpful and friendly and the space is primarily outdoors and comfy. They have most items packed up to go, but since we sat and ate, they plated pretty much each item for us nice and fresh. They even gave us fresh water in a bowl for the dog, which was a nice little extra touch. The food itself was delicious. We had a little bit of everything including the raw pizza, mock \"tuna\" wrap, raw lasagna which was a special of the day, farawfel which is the raw version of falafel alongside a raw hummus and a raw dill sauce. We also got a few raw mandarin orange and guava juices. Somehow we still had room for mango/strawberry pie and a slice of chocolate creme pie as well. Out of the group of four, three were not vegan and everybody was really happy with the meal. The lasagna was a particular rave and for me, the mock tuna was especially impressive. I think it was made with sprouted sunflower seeds although there were doubtlessly many other interesting things in there.

Dan added Sipz in San Diego, CA.

So it was written:
This is the new location of Sipz up in North Park. The food menu is basically the same and the desserts seem to be identical, so all good, though the dining room is a little on the nicer/newer side of things and not quite as casual as the other location, though is by no means a bad thing, just a slightly variation. The neighborhood is filled with bars and restaurants so if you wanted to walk around and go hang out or drink after dinner, you\'d be better off in this neighborhood than with the other one.
