Madras Mahal

Rating: 4 / 5 (from 1 reviewers)

Cuisine: Indian, North Indian, South Indian

104 Lexington Ave (Between 27th and 28th St)
New York, NY, 10016 United States

South Indian and all vegetarian, numerous vegan choices. Some particularly creative and interesting dishes, and one of the oldest of the South Indian vegetarian restaurants in this neighborhood. They have selections from Gujarat and Punjab as well as other parts of India, and for their lunch special on weekends they have some hard to find snacks such as Vada Pav.

Sometimes the vegetarian Indian restaurants in the area of 27th St and Lexington Ave blur together a bit. I went to Madras Mahal not long ago for lunch on a Saturday and made a mental note that the menu looked really good and I should return. That first day I was pleasantly surprised to discover they had Vada Pav, one of my favorite Indian street snacks which is hard to come by here. The next time a friend and I came for dinner and the meal was quite good if not spectacular. The tofu and cauliflower curry was somewhat unusual. It's not common for these places to employ tofu, excepting the Brick Lane Curry House who will make just about anything with tofu. The samosas were notably good, especially the crust. Also the Chappati which is just a light bread was very fresh. They seem to do all bread products very well here. The menu says "vegan and jain friendly" which is of course comforting. I have become comfortable asking for food without dairy, cream, butter, yoghurt, ghee, and all of these things when eating in an Indian restaurant, but it is nice to be able to just say "vegan" and have them understand immediately and confirm that all of my selections are indeed no problem. The restaurant ambience is a good balance. It's not excessively fancy but it feels one notch above casual. The menu had some unusual selections which make this menu stand out a bit for me in this crowded neighborhood and I think I will becoming back here, especially to get more of the snack dishes and appetizers of which I felt I could easily have ordered many for my entire meal.
