Counter is an incredible and almost-vegan restaurant in the East Village. The food is gourmet and not inexpensive, but it is well worth it for incredibly creative food and numerous well-crafted vegetarian and vegan dishes. Used to be all vegan, recently switched chefs and now includes some dairy and eggs.

This has long been one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants, and I think the new chef is even better than the old. Though I do miss some of my old favorites (like the cashew-calamata pat?) there are many new choices which are even more creative than the old. I recently went for brunch there which was a first for me, and the farmer's breakfast (pictured at right) was particularly glorious. The other day, dinner was sublime. Oh, and do not miss the chocolate tart for dessert. I vote it among the top 3 vegan desserts in NYC. I have spoken.
