Though Broadway East serves meat, they have a particular focus on foods that are organic so the menu is quite vegetarian and vegan friendly. When I heard they were opening I was enthusiastic because most of the vegetarian restaurants around Chinatown tend to be, well, pretty Chinese. Here we have something gourmet and western, with even a bit of a southern flavor seeing as how the first thing I ever got there was BBQ tofu with grits and a hush puppy. They have home-made sodas which deserve a special mention, the pear-ginger soda I had was actually fantastic. Prices are predictably high, but the decor is actually quite beautiful and given that it is in a somewhat out of the way neighborhood and that the restaurant itself is quite large, it's probably not going to be hard to get in too often. I went on a weeknight and it was almost empty, though I hope that doesn't mean they have trouble attracting customers. My food was very tasty, and I'd certainly go again. My friend had a chicken dish and also reported it to be good. Portions probably could be a little bigger, but hey, it's Manhattan and it's gourmet and that's how it goes. That being said, there aren't a whole lot of gourmet vegetarian places so this is a welcome addition to the likes of Candle 79 and Counter and Blossom even though this place isn't quite as expansive in it's vegetarian and vegan selection for the moment, but at least somewhat noteworthy for the effort.
