Cuisine: Falafel, Israeli, Middle Eastern

New York, NY, 10002 United States

Counter service Israeli hummus and falafel joint, plus Belgian fries. Large salad & topping bar where you can choose your own additions to your sandwich. Pretty cheap and high quality fresh food. Used to be all-vegetarian but now serves meat too.

Ashkara used to be all-vegetarian, but I guess after a few months they decided they didn't want to limit their customer base in a neighborhood hugely popular with drunk people and crowded with late-night dining options. They stand apart from your average falafel joint in several ways. First of all, the falafel and hummus are both excellent. They also have very fresh pita bread and an enormous salad bar which you can use to fill up your sandwiches or plates. Lastly, they make really great belgian fries. The ambience is very bare, just some stools and tables and a long counter, but they are open very late and a good place to stop before, during, or after a visit to any of the nearby bars in the Lower East.
